Master Bath Fresh idea: A mirror is standard over the sink, but its presentation doesn’t have to be. Our editors used a basic wall hook from the hardware store and grosgrain ribbon from a crafts store to add height to framed mirrors. (For extra stability, hang each mirror with a nail in back, then attach ribbon and tie to hook.)

Shelving Fresh idea: Find space anywhere. Placing a shelf above a doorway for display or storage is a great way to utilize dead space and add Craftsman character.

Dining Area Fresh idea: Squeeze in extra dinner guests. Combine a pair of benches and two armchairs around the dining table. “Not only is it easy for kids (and easy to clean), but you’ll have more space,” says interior designer Anne Coyle.

Living Room Fresh idea: Show off your little ones. Mat and frame your kids’ paintings for an unexpected personal touch. Anne gave her two young sons watercolors in the palette of the room and let their creativity lead the way. The results are displayed over the mantel and console table.

Kitchen Fresh idea: Add homey touches to utilitarian spaces. Michaela designed a low bookcase at the end of the island to look like furniture. Filled with baskets or cookbooks, it provides extra storage and softens the “kitchen” feel in an open floor plan.

Den Fresh idea: Use a big fixture in a small space. “With tall ceilings, you need a large ceiling fixture—it makes it feel cozy,” Anne says. She painted the standard dark iron finish on the lantern with regular wall paint. Now its soft shade of green matches the pillows on the sofa.

Master Bedroom Fresh idea: Create a sanctuary that’s serene—and work-free. Anne fit a small desk underneath windows in the hallway area just outside the master bedroom. “I think it’s important to separate work and sleeping space,” Anne says. “This way you can surf the Web late at night without disturbing anyone, then roll into bed right next door.”

Girl’s Room Fresh idea: Get creative with reading lamps. Anne loves using articulating (pivoting) sconces, often used to illuminate bookcases, over beds as a clever space saver.

Mudroom Fresh idea: Make your mudroom more than a catchall. Michaela located the space off the laundry room, creating an easy place to stack folded clothes that are ready to go upstairs.

Laundry Fresh idea: Display items that you would typically tuck away. Our editors filled plastic containers with lightbulbs, clothespins, and dog bones; then they printed labels and attached them with raffia for a stylish presentation—and easy access.

Project Room Fresh idea: Turn a closet into a spot for downloading and printing digital photos. To create a desk area, Anne designed a hinged wooden surface (right) that flips down for an instant desk or folds up when the space is needed for hanging clothes.

Garden Fresh idea: Place a large glazed urn in the center of a bed to create a focal point. “Sometimes a huge ginger jar looks just as beautiful as any flowers or shrubs,” he says, “and if it’s in a complementary color, it’ll look as if it’s been there forever.”

Back Patio Fresh idea: Try using bullnose-edge bricks, typically found around the edges of pools, brick planters, and raised beds on a patio. With a curved, softer profile, they “make a more inviting bench-like seat for people to perch on and add instant age to the garden,” Guillermo says.
